Painting HMS King George V in 1/6000 scale

In today’s blog we tackled one of my favourite ships of all time in my favourite scale to paint – HMS King George the Fifth in 1/6000 scale. Some people are daunted by such small scales, but I find that it’s a very forgiving scale and can quickly be painted to a high tabletop standard.

A full list of the paints used will be given at the end.

Here we have the printed cured and cleaned up model of the HMS King George V in 6000 scale. Unfortunately the picture doesn’t show much of the ship’s details!

First thing to do is prime the model, usually I do this with a black spray paint but my local hobby store has been out of black spray so I had to manually prime the KGV, the hardships of my life.

The first colour applied to the ship is the decking, which is painted with Vallejo Green Ochre. I used a fine detail brush for this.

Next the ship’s hull and vertical surfaces are painted grey, the aptly named Admiralty grey by TT Combat was used. The tops of the turrets and non-wooden deck areas are painted a darker grey. Ospedale grey, again by TT Combat, was the colour I choose for this. For lifeboats I paint them all in a simple white.

I use two washes on the ship, the first is Nuln oil by Citadel Colour for any grey areas of the ship. The deck and lifeboats are washed with Agrax Earthshade, also by Citadel Colour.

The base is first painted with Night Lords Blue (Citadel Colours) before having the outline of the waves painted with a thinned Ahriman Blue (Citadel Colours).

Once the Ahriman blue has dried the leading edges of the waves are painted with a 50/50 mix of Ahriman blue and White.

The whole base is then washed with Coelia Greenshade (Citadel Colours)

Once the wash is dry, the edges of the waves are picked out in white, as is the wake and the embossed ships name on the tab.

HMS King George the Fifth is now complete and ready to defend the waves!
